About Crete Safari Experience
Crete Safari Experience is a guide to the dirt-road side of the island: the jeep and quad safaris that leave the coast road behind for mountain villages, plateaus, gorges and the odd show cave, usually with a long taverna lunch somewhere in the middle.
The list is short on purpose — a handful of real routes from two bases, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos — because that is what actually runs here, and because a short list we know track by track beats a long one padded with tours nobody has checked.
Every guide says plainly who a trip suits and who should sit it out. Bumpy tracks, quad dust and full mountain days are brilliant for some travellers and miserable for others, and pretending otherwise helps nobody up a dirt road.
How we choose
- Only trips that are actually bookable, with live availability — nothing that quietly stopped running a summer ago.
- Prices are taken from the live listings and re-checked; if a guide says from €89, that is the real starting price.
- Every recommendation comes with an honest who-should-skip-it note, not just a sales pitch.
- A short list over a long one: we compare a handful of routes properly rather than ranking fifty we have never seen.
- When one option is the only option — like our single south-coast run — we say exactly that.
Who is behind this site
The guides are written by Antonis Kandilakis, based in Crete. Travelndo, where the bookings happen, is our own booking platform — not a third-party affiliate scheme — and My Creta Villa is our villa company. When you book through the links here, we earn from the booking, and that is what funds the guides.
It is also why we still tell you who should skip a trip. These guides only work if you trust them, and we would rather lose a booking than send you up a mountain track you will not enjoy.
What a safari in Crete actually means
A safari in Crete has nothing to do with wildlife and everything to do with the parts of the island the tour buses skip. Most trips are small-group 4x4 days, with a few by quad, that climb off the asphalt and into the mountains: the Lasithi Plateau and the Cave of Zeus, the slopes of Psiloritis and Sfendoni Cave, Sarakina Gorge, hill villages where lunch is still whatever the family cooked that morning, and dirt tracks down to coves you cannot reach any other way.
The reason to book one is simple. Crete is far bigger and emptier inland than the coastal resorts suggest, and a lot of it is genuinely hard to see without a driver who knows which track is passable and which leads to a dead end. A good guide turns a long day in a jeep into the part of the holiday people end up talking about: the viewpoint over the Libyan Sea, the spring under a plane tree, the shepherd who waves you through his flock.
